This 45 minute tutorial takes you through the creation of a walk, specifically a walk cycle. I have taken the approach that I would use for traditional cel animation and applied it to computer animation. It does not matter what computer program you use because what I am teaching here is how to set poses not where every “button” is in a specific program. So, you will pose your character with the criteria I explain about symmetry in pose and timing to create a natural walk.
Using these principles, you can then take your walk animation and experiment with giving it a definite character. Perhaps he goes higher in the Passing Pose. What happens if he goes lower? Is he “cool” and rotates and slants his shoulders? Once you understand the basic formula, you can break it all kinds of ways to create any type of character. If it is a very broad or cartoony character, you can push those limits even further!
